The Co-op Local Community Fund is our way of giving back to our members and their communities.

Co-op members get 1% of everything they spend on Co-op products to give to a local cause that matters to them.

You can now apply to be one of these causes for the next round of funding, running from April to September 2017.

We’re looking for 3 projects in each of around 1,500 local communities across the UK. We’ll choose projects led by small, locally based organisations that:

  • benefit the local community centred around Co-op food stores and funeral homes
  • have the greatest possible benefit to their community
  • make maximum use of the amount of funding available

U Decide is a new development linked to Locality Planning, to generate ideas and allocate funding in Aberdeen.  This approach is called Participatory Budgeting (PB) which directly involves local people in making decisions about how public money is spent in their community.PB was first introduced in Brazil in 1989 and its tools and principles are now used in many places across the world, including the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe.PB aims to engage residents, community groups and representatives from all parts of the community to discuss priorities, make spending proposals that will benefit the community or solve a particular issue, and then to vote on them.

Following on from the Art in Aden public consultation and the production of a Public Art Strategy for Aden Country Park we are delighted to launch the project with the Midsummer Arts Festival on Sunday 19th June between 11am and 4pm.

The Midsummer Arts Festival will offer a range of activities for all ages including an opportunity to see the art work of the six commissioned artists who are exploring the theme of Secrets, Stories and Mysteries.

The six temporary art installations will take many shapes, forms and mediums (including a 10 feet tall midsummer badger puppet!) and will all relate to Aden Country Park in some way. Each artists work will be sited in Aden Country Park, forming an arts trail which visitors are encouraged to explore.

Commissioned professional artists include Allan Watson, Carla Angus, Gordon Burnett, Jenny Johnstone, Kate Robinson and Ken Cockburn.

Artwork will include a 10 foot badger, a poetry walk, sand painting, an opportunity to scrabble wi Doric, a trail of welcome shelters and a larger than life brobdingnagian gate. Some of the artists will also be providing hands on activity, so come along and get involved.

In addition the onsite Aberdeenshire Farming Museum is also officially launching its new temporary museum exhibition as part of the Midsummer Arts Festival. The exhibition aims to explore what visitors think and feel about the farming heritage of the North East of Scotland.

Other activities will include bird box making, country fair stalls, free drop in craft activities, face painting and Tam O Shunter train rides.

The event also ties in with the second Music at Aden performance. Following on from the hugely successful Aberden Sinfionetta String Quartet Richard Ingham is to provide a free Masterclass & Recital. The Director of Exhibitions will play a key role in the realisation of V&A Dundee and our future success, delivering a public programme that excites and inspires audiences. As a department head, the post-holder will have two principal responsibilities: to lead the development, planning and implementation of the temporary exhibitions programme (comprising touring exhibitions from the V&A in London, as well as exhibitions generated by V&A Dundee itself); and to lead the realisation and future renewal of the permanent Scottish Design Galleries.

The Director of Exhibitions will have expertise in design (leading our research plan), as well as outstanding project management experience. This is a demanding and highly rewarding position that will play a vital part in the founding of a new institution.

Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) is a vibrant cultural hub for the North East of Scotland, inspiring, exploring and engaging through live performance and creative projects in our three distinctive city centre venues – His Majesty’s Theatre, the Music Hall and The Lemon Tree.

As part of the redevelopment of Aberdeen Art Gallery 2014-2017, we are commissioning a limited number of new artworks.

We are now inviting artists to submit project outlines for the Remembrance Hall within Aberdeen Art Gallery, a space that was added to the gallery in 1925. In the redeveloped gallery, the Remembrance Hall will be a pivotal space which visitors encounter again and again as they travel through the gallery and towards the Cowdray Hall (concert hall). It is intended as a quiet space for reflection and commemoration, alongside the Aberdeen City Memorial Court outside the gallery, on the corner of Schoolhill and Blackfriars Street, which acts as the city’s cenotaph.

The commissioned artwork will reflect the sensitive, contemplative, respectful nature of the space, and we encourage artists to think about the wide-reaching impact of conflicts. These reflections may include but need not be limited to the World Wars.

Several other elements will be displayed in this space: rolls of honour, a digital floor projection and on the balcony above, a GALLERY OF MEMORIES submitted by Aberdonians and those with links to Aberdeen.

We welcome proposals for works in any medium. The work will be expected to be completed by the time the gallery re-opens at the end of 2017. The deadline for concept submissions is midnight on 24 July 2016.
