Call for proposals for a school-based artwork

November 11, 2015

Deadline: 18 December 2015 at 17:00 This is an exciting opportunity for a professional artist to work with a small group of pupils and staff to create a high quality artwork for the school’s internal entrance area; for children’s creativity to be stimulated through new approaches in the expressive arts, to improve the school environment, and to leave a lasting impression on all participants. The piece can be 2- or 3-D, in any durable medium, and should encapsulate what Airyhall means to staff, children and the local community. Consultations with stakeholders will take place before the artist is selected, led by Aberdeen City Council’s Creative Learning Team. We are looking for an artist with the following skills and experience: – Working with young people with different abilities in a school setting. – The ability to balance the creation of a new artwork, with the need for meaningful participation by a small group of pupils, and stakeholders from the wider school community. – High quality artistic practice. – An imaginative approach to the brief. – The ability to install artworks in public spaces. – Working within a set budget and timescale. The space for the artwork is an internal entrance hall, directly behind a glazed wall / double doors. There are two areas, to the left and right, the dimensions of which are approximately 3.5m (l) x 1.4m (d) x 2.6m (h). One or both of these areas can be used, but the artwork cannot overarch the space. The work can be freestanding or wall-mounted, bearing in mind that this is a relatively busy thoroughfare. The Airyhall school community has raised £2,000 for the project, to include an initial planning meeting, up to four delivery sessions in school, materials and expenses. Shortlisted artists will be interviewed at Airyhall in January 2016, and the project will run until Apr / May 2016. Key dates will be agreed at a planning meeting with the artist, members of the Creative Learning Team and Airyhall staff / parents. To apply, please submit your CV along with one side of A4 detailing your experience, art form, PVG Membership Number, and an initial outline of how you would meet the brief, particularly in terms of delivering sessions in school. Please provide up to 4 images of previous projects (max file size 5MB and in a format compatible with a PC). Send your application to MSweetnam@aberdeencity.gov.uk
