Aberdeen City Council is delighted to commission a writer to take part in a special project which will help shape the cultural narrative of Aberdeen.
Made in Aberdeen will illustrate the multi-faceted contemporary face of Aberdeen: the expansive skies, rivers and landscapes of the city: the built environment and architecture: the people of the city, incorporating the international dimension who contribute to the city’s diversity and vibrancy: it should also reflect the city’s natural heritage, its rivers, hills and parks, culture and the wildlife inhabiting the city.
Applicants must demonstrate experience of developing creative, exciting and innovative work which responds to visual imagery and is sensitive to the subject matter. The writer will be required to produce a limited number of pieces in response to up to 30-45 photographic images which have been commissioned by the Council. The writer should be able to work to a deadline and have a track record of producing high quality creative writing to a set brief. The writer should be adept in providing concise written responses to illustrations and photographs which evoke a sense of place. Examples of previous work which enables the selection panel to assess this requirement should be submitted with the application. The number of individual pieces to be written in response to the images will be based on the format of the writing and the style of the writer, applicants should indicate how they would approach this in their application.
Applicants must submit two examples of previous work of a similar nature which is indicative of their style, along with up to two side of A4, including an artist’s statement on experience, skills and motivation for the project, and two references in support of their application. The successful applicant will be notified by Friday 24th July, date for submission of the completed work shall depend on the date of submission of the complete images by the Photographers, as stipulated in the Photographer brief, subject to agreement between the Council and the successful writer, but should be no later than 8 weeks from the date of submission of completed images by the Photographers.
A fee of £1000 is available for this commission. This fee should include all costs associated with the project.
