Artist Brief:

Made in Aberdeen Artist Commission – ‘What is the 7th plinth?’

Deadline: 9 February 2015 at 5.00pm

SMART in partnership with Robert Gordon University presents a Made in Aberdeen Artist Commission, supported by Aberdeen City Council.

As part of the inaugural Look Again Visual Art & Design Festival 2015 we are inviting early career artists who either work or live in Aberdeen city to submit a proposal for a temporary site-specific public art commission forming part of the ‘Look at Me’ trail.

Background concept

Aberdeen’s city centre has a diverse range of sculptures.  These range from traditional to contemporary and perform many functions, such as commemoration, memorial and remembrance, as well as the expression of ideas.  As part of the festivals first year focus on visual art and design the Made in Aberdeen Artist Commission will sit alongside works selected from local, national and international practitioners who have responded to the traditional figurative statues, transforming an existing sculptural trail into a new and exciting experience called ‘Look at Me’.

As part of the Made in Aberdeen Artist Commission we would like to engage an early career artist or collective to make a new and inspiring piece of public art that will make a mark on the city landscape and could take on any medium e.g. sculpture, a light work, video mapping, a physical structure, a drawing, live art/performance – all creative disciplines can be explored.  This commission will be ‘the 7th plinth’ and be included in the sculpture trail of ‘Look at Me’.

Made in Aberdeen Artist Commission

This opportunity is open to all early career artists, such as 4th year students from Gray’s School of Art as well as graduates that are 1-2 years out of art school but are either living or working in Aberdeen city.

For this commission we are interested in applications that respond to the artist’s relationship with the region. As well as considering – “What is a ‘plinth’? Is it a traditional plinth? Is it a conceptual plinth? Is it a plinth at all?  There is a 19th century tradition of public sculpture and plinths in Aberdeen – could the artist propose how the plinth, or what the plinth, should or could be?”

Duration of sited commission  – Wednesday 8 April – Sunday 12 April 2015.

The aims and objectives of the Made In Aberdeen Artist Commission are to:

Support the retention of talent in the North East.

Support new production and presentation in the city.

Encourage new collaborations and foster relationships between artists, producers and programmers.

Increase accessibility to new contemporary work.

Raise awareness of the Made In Aberdeen initiative/ the city synonymies with supporting risk-taking production.

Made In Aberdeen is a council initiative; it is entirely funded by Aberdeen City Council.
