UNRECORDED by Jen Bradley

June 16, 2014

PRIVATE VIEW INVITATION
Thursday 19 June 6pm – 8pm

Exhibition runs from:
21 June – 3 August 2014

Jen Bradley endeavours to illuminate the disregarded, she borrows the method of the archivist and archaeologist when attempting to decipher, categorise and evaluate found material. Jen captures remnants of a fleeting existence, remnants of a life once lived, questioning where history exists if it is not recorded?

New works presented at the gallery make you look again at the familiar, as Jen is the recorder of unrecorded human traces. Door buzzers are given a new elevation, cast in wax, resin and plaster they take on a new preciousness. Found remnants of exchange left unnoticed are presented like an archaeological dig with each part being numbered and logged. This exhibition opens our eyes to everyday things we normally whiz past and take very little notice of. Therefore, will viewing them as artworks give us a new perspective of our daily surroundings?

Since graduating in 2013 with a BA (Hons) in Painting from Gray’s School of Art, Jen Bradley has continued to expand her list of exhibitions and awards. Jen was accepted for the Hospitalfield Graduate Residency, which provided her research time in preparation for the show at SMART. As a Gray’s graduate, she was commissioned by the AquaTerra Group to create a bespoke piece of work inspired by the company. Jen was also recently awarded an Aberdeen City Council Visual Artist Award, which enabled her to partake in the Emerging Artist Residency at Scottish Sculpture Workshop, Lumsden. The casting techniques learned at SSW have been invaluable and pivotal in the realisation of Jen’s latest body of work. Jen has also had her artwork exhibited nationally in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh and is featured in private collections.

The New Art Look to the North Award was set up by The SMART Gallery in 2012 to support emerging graduates coming out of art school by providing them with a solo exhibition and financial support towards material costs.

The SMART gallery selects a final year student each year from Gray’s School of Art to work with them over the coming year and present their first major solo exhibition at the gallery. Park Brown International presents a prize of £500 to the awardee to help towards material costs as well as further sponsorship of the exhibition.

We hope you will be able to join us at The SMART Gallery for this thought provoking exhibition…

Best wishes,
the SMART team
