Kick start your weekend at Aberdeen Art Gallery and travel back to 1914 to explore a unique kind of creativity.
There will be a licensed cash bar serving 6.30-9.30pm.
Exhibitions: Enjoy a unique opportunity to explore two fantastic exhibitions After Hours! Aberdeen’s War and James McBey War Artist.
Speed Sketch Challenge: Do you have what it takes to be a fearless war artist? Can you cope under the pressure? Attempt our speed sketching challenge to find out. Prizes for the best speed sketchers. Challenges will run at 7pm, 8pm, 9pm.
Print your Own Propaganda: Join printmakers from Peacock Visual Arts for this drop-in print making session. Print a bold design to take away. Drop-in between 6.30-9pm.
Pop-Poppies: Unleash your designer flair and make an alternative remembrance poppy to wear with pride and style. A donations box will be available with all donations going towards the Poppy Appeal. 6.30-10pm
Strike a Pose: Try on our authentic wartime costumes and strike your best pose. We’ll authenticate your photo for you and make it available for free download after the event. Members of The Gordon Highlanders 1914-1918 group will also be on hand to tell you more about the uniforms and equipment. 6.30-10pm
Live Music: Jazz musician Cindy Douglas will be performing a very special set inspired by the era: 6.45-7.45pm. Young performers from Aberdeen Student Show will also be entertaining audiences with renditions of wartime classics: 8:30-9.30pm
War of Words: Join artist and writer Graeme Milne for poetic taster sessions and discover how one can find humour even in the most challenging of situations. Suitable for beginners -all welcome. Taster sessions will run at 7pm, 8pm, 9pm.
Art Talk: Agitate and Educate: Art in Russia and Europe at the Time of the Great War. Art Historian Dr Amy Bryzgel will be giving a special talk exploring propaganda posters post 1917. Suitable for all levels of interest, no prior knowledge necessary. Talks starts 7:45pm.
The Arrival of the Postman: Take an opportunity to tell those around you how important they are to you. Write a telegram to someone special and ‘post it’ in the Gallery. 6.30-10pm
Guerilla Cranes: Help us to create a colourful installation and spread the good feeling by folding an origami peace crane. Leave your crane somewhere in the Gallery for one of our daytime visitors to take away. 6.30-10pm
Reconnaissance Mission: There will be a selection of challenging activity trails and stations for all to enjoy. Enlist and earn yourself a decorative badge of honour and the chance to enter our fabulous prize draw. 6.30-10pm
This event is drop-in, no booking is required. Please note that spaces on the above activities are subject to availability, there may be a short waiting time for drop-in activities. Places on timed sessions will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
