In this solo exhibition titled Remnants, Edinburgh based artist, Steven Cox continues to explore and challenge the conventions of contemporary abstract painting through a presentation of new painterly works. Pushing the materialistic boundaries of paint, Remnants is generated through a labour-intensive process determined by temporal, materialistic and self-imposed obstacles. Putting to use wasted materials found within the studio environment, the artist has utilised the discarded by-product of hundreds of hours of personal exploration, investigation and study. The humble throwaway material has therefore been recycled, adopting a new identity and function through a series of intimate, medium and large-scale canvas works. These wasted materials pay homage to the artist’s time spent within his studio where such materials were originally used to plan past works, wipe away excess paint or staple canvas to wooden stretchers. Such materials have therefore been given a new sense of worth, collectively forming an abstract portrait of the artist’s studio environment.
Impressions of used ripped material, masking tape, clothing labels and staples are juxtaposed alongside an array of traditional and untraditional painterly techniques: brush marks, erasures, glazes, smears, spray painted lines and stencils are set against surfaces that have been imprinted, scratched and worn. Throughout Remnants, an exploration of painterly process is evident, for the artist’s attention to detail showcases awareness to painterly layering, construction and craftsmanship. Smooth rich surfaces are presented alongside impressions of ripped rag or clothing material, whilst the hard negative spaces of rectangular label like shapes hint at modernist abstraction.
Exploring the works further, a classical palette of sombre tones is dominant throughout; brighter colours are used both modestly and rarely. Such a palette references the history of painting, whilst the use of spray-paint hints at both street and contemporary culture at large. The immediacy of such gestural mark making is contrastable to the slower processes of classical painting. Both processes are united, paying homage to the historical evolution of painting as a discipline.
