Fabric of the Land: Arts Education Residency

February 19, 2013

The Creative Learning Team at Aberdeen City Council, in partnership with Fabric of the Land
at the University of Aberdeen and SMART Consultants, are looking for an artist to deliver a
one term residency in an Aberdeen City School.
Fabric of the Land is a series of exhibitions exploring links between art and science and is
organised and curated by SMART Consultants on behalf of the University of Aberdeen’s
Geology and Petroleum Geology departments. This artist’s residency project will extend the
remit of Fabric of the Land by bringing a visual artist and a geologist to work in partnership
with a secondary school in Aberdeen over a period of twelve weeks to create a dynamic,
creative learning environment, with a particular focus on geology.
Cross curricular arts partnership projects are at the heart of the arts education the Creative
Learning Team develop and deliver for Aberdeen City. The residency will bring vitality to the
whole school environment, impacting positively on wider teaching and learning.
The residency also includes the commissioning of a site specific piece of art, permanent or
temporary, related to the wider Fabric of the Land 2013 core remit and themes, and to be
showcased during Fabric of the Land 2013. The site‐specific commission will allow the artist
and geologist further time to work collaboratively, informed in part by their experiences
during the school residency, but also in response to the interplay between geology and
visual art.
Contract undertaken on a freelance basis with Creative Learning at Aberdeen City Council.
Duration: beginning week of 15th April 2013 for 2 days per week (1 day delivery in school + 1
day development time). Followed by production of a thematically linked site specific artwork
in July & August 2013, for installation/exhibition late August 2013 in Aberdeen.
Fee: £175/day + travel for school’s residency + £3,000 flat fee for production of site specific
artwork (July & August 2013).
Total fee: £7,200 (Additional budget for materials of £4,000).
For further information including key tasks, skills and experience, and how to apply, please
email creativelearningteam@aberdeencity.gov.uk and request ‘Fabric of the Land Artist’s
Brief’. Applicants must be available for interview 13th March 2013.
