V&A Games Design Residency- Call for Proposals

January 11, 2013

The V&A is inviting applications from early to mid-career UK-based digital games designers who wish to develop their practice in response to the V&A’s Britain 1500 – 1900 galleries. The Residency will be based in the V&A for six months, and will include a substantial public engagement programme. It will be followed by a production period that will be based in Dundee, funded by the V&A at Dundee partners, including the University of Abertay Dundee. The V&A Residency will take place over a six-month period from October 2013 – March 2014 in London with the Dundee-based production period to take place before end of July 2014. A studio will be provided at the V&A in London, and a work base in Dundee. The residency has been organised in collaboration with UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE), the games industry body.

The residency is open to UK-based practitioners. It will provide a monthly bursary (taxable) and additional budget for materials and equipment. A team drawn from the Museum’s staff, the University of Abertay Dundee and an industry mentor will provide support throughout the project. We are interested in practitioners who: wish to work with the Museum’s resources and collections; would welcome the opportunity to work actively on projects with the public; and are interested in presenting and interpreting their work for visitors. Applicants should have a track record of development, innovation and regular exposure to new projects.

We recognise that games designers are likely to work in small companies or groups. This residency is open to groups, but we ask for one or two members of the group to be nominated as leads. It should be noted however, that the bursary is a single lump sum for the residency and would have to be divided accordingly. The residency is also open to pairs or individuals.

The Victoria and Albert Museum has three Residency Studios, two multi-disciplinary studios and a third studio, for ceramics, situated within the Ceramics Galleries. The Residency Programme is integral to Learning programmes at the Museum. Past Residents have gone on to achieve significant success in their professional careers, winning prises and securing gallery representation.
