Creative Scotland: New Playwrights Awards 2013

In association with Creative Scotland, the New Playwrights Awards are an exciting opportunity for emerging writers living in Scotland with a genuine commitment to writing for the theatre.

Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland will work with four new writers giving them the time, space and some financial support to develop their work and help further their career.

Writers will be given professional mentoring from one of Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland’s Associate Playwrights or mentors.

New for 2013, writers will also benefit from a week long retreat at Cove Park, providing them with the time and space to focus on their writing, as well as a script development workshop and rehearsed reading with an experienced director to really bring their new play to life.

At least one of the Awards will support a new writer whose focus is on writing in Gaelic or Scots.

Each playwright will receive:

– A £2,000 cash bursary.

– 3 mentoring sessions with a professional playwright to help them move their work forward.

– A week long retreat at Cove Park.

– A day of script development and a rehearsed reading with a professional director and actors.

The selected playwrights will also be invited to attend theatre events with other new writers, and will have plenty of opportunities to network with theatre professionals.

Am I eligible?

– Applications are open to playwrights who have had no more than one professional production of their work.

– Applicants must be based in Scotland.

– Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to playwriting in their application.

– (Note: Students in full time formal education are not eligible.)

How do I apply?

To apply for a New Writers Award for Playwrights, please email including:

– A covering letter stating how this award would benefit your progress as a playwright.

– A description of an idea for a script that you would like to focus on (up to one page), indicating whether you would like to write in English, Gaelic or Scots.

– Two different ten page samples of your writing (script extracts where possible).

– A CV detailing your writing experience to date.

Your application will be considered by a panel of playwrights and other arts professionals.
